The town was incorporated in 1843, but first settled in 1816. Eufaula experienced a treacherous beginning with the Creek War of 1836, which featured the Trail of Tears. With the boom in riverboat traffic in the mid-1800s, the area developed into a prosperous community and emerged as a major port. Lake Eufaula, a popular recreational land, was created with the damming of The Chattahoochee River.



Eufaula City Schools consists of Eufaula Primary, Eufaula Elementary, Admiral Moorer Middle School and Eufaula High School. The Lakeside School and Parkview Christian School are private secondary schools, while Wallace Community College offers post-secondary education in the area.
